US Group Warns of Sexual Violence Against Darfur Refugees
16 Days Of Activism Against Gender ViolenceEven in the circumstances of genocide where an entire population suffers, women are especially targeted and oppressed.
For those who say women's initiatives should not be addressed because issues like the conflict in Darfur are more deserving of our attention, here is a great example of how these issues intertwine and can be approached simultaneously.

Sexual violence is a huge part of the violence and genocide in Darfur and other places in Africa. Women would be raped as a form of genocide itself because the goal was to impregnate the women with their own sperm as well as violate their rights. In refugee camps, women are sent to gather fire wood because they will "only be raped" but the men will be killed. This is an extremely important and current issue.
ReplyDeleteIn my AFAM class I realized that the definition of genocide crime under international law (a series of specified acts committed with the intent to destroy in part or in whole a religious, ethnic, national or racial group) does not include gender. Which I think is interesting, to say the least, since rape tactics are so prevalent in circumstances that ARE formally considered genocide.
